It’s about time i write a journal... the last one dates from back in february!

What happened in the meanwhile: well, not much really. Nothing out of the ordinary anyway. Oh, yes i’ve got a facebook page now, but i think most of my DA friends already noticed.

I’ve just uploaded the last in the Crown-Orb- Scepter series: Ma’at. And as promised i’ll give some sort of explanation. I’ve actually just started off with wanting to make 3 pieces that would ‘fit’ together. The idea of these three symbols of power really came out of nowhere when i was sketching (i’ll upload some of the sketches soonish). The first piece ‘Oya’ –strangely enough - kinda made itself. But it wasn’t until i made the second, ‘Chang O’, that i found a pattern in what i was doing. (yeah sounds silly doesn’t it?) So i thought i’d share this with you now.
The names i used are not at all random. Oya is the Yoruba goddess of the Niger river. In one interpretation “she’s a patroness of female leadership and strenght. Because of this women will often ask her for the right words to gain power.” Needless to point out that the crown is thé symbol par excellence of leadership and power.
Chang O is the Chinese moon goddess (or rather, the woman that lives on the moon, depends on the version of the story ). Because she lives ‘exiled’ from humanity in a sense she represents (to me anyway) contemplation and wisdom. The orb reflects the neccesity of wisdom and contemplation when you are in a position of power.
Ma’at is an Egyptian deity, or better even, she is a concept. Much like the Logos in ancient Greek philosophy, she is the law(s) who shaped the cosmos from the chaos, the natural order. The scepter is like Ma’at’s feather: she uses it to weigh ones worthiness – in egyptian mythology she determines whether or not you can pass into the afterlife, in my interpretation wheter or not you have the ability to use power wisely.
To me, it seems that you can read them as being a reflection on what it takes to have real power: leadership (or vision), wisdom (or experience) and balance (or reason, not rationality per se).

I hope you like the series. The last one’s been a real pain in the ass: it’s been sitting around in my ‘ in progress’ map nearly finished since february. for quite a while i didn’t like it and wanted to start over again until like last week...good advice: don’t throw away your drawing too soon, you’ll never know what you’ll think of them after 6 months or so.

On a more general note: has anyone else noticed that fanart actually does better on DA than original works? I know i’m a bit behind with some of these hypes (i totally don’t get the whole Naruto thing...Avatar on the other hand is just amazing ) but seriously; shouldn’t we value personal style and ideas over the things we already know and like? Or am i seeing this all wrong?

Films to watch if you find the time

-Persona and The hour of the wolf by Bergman (only for the lil filmcrowd though, stay away from this if you didn’t understand what was going on in The Fountain or the last Matrix movie. I mean: those two are completely obvious in comparison to Bergman films, trust me.)
-i kinda enjoyed Hairspray; it looks silly but it makes some delicious statements about white middleclass hollywood movies.
-Again, i can honestly recommend most David Lynch movies. But don’t go for Blue Velvet: i prefer Mulholland drive and the Straight Story (especially the last one is always a surprize to everyone).
